Tuesday April 26, 2011, Meeting
Combing and Carding
Wolbach
Farm, 18 Wolbach Rd, Sudbury, MA 01776
Join our
own Elaine Donahue and Wendy Axtman for a demonstration of wool combing on
English 5 pitch wool combs. Combing wool results in a worsted yarn that is
smooth and relatively inelastic. Long wools are typically used for wool
combing. Elaine and Wendy will also demonstrate carding on hand cards and drum
carding. Hand carding shorter wools results in a woolen yarn that is lofty and
elastic, suitable for knitting. Drum carding also results in woolen yarn, but
is a faster and very useful method of carding a large amount of fiber. You will
have a chance to try both hand and drum carding.
